Ephesians 4:7–16 — "To each one of us grace was given." Gifts handed to each, for the good of all. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
This is the hinge between the unity Paul has described and how we actually live it out: God's grace, given to each of us, empowers us to work together. Our gifts were never meant to make us feel useful — they're sovereignly placed for the benefit of the people around us, and used in love they build the whole body up.
A few things to carry into your week:- Grace is measured out to each of us — no one is left ungifted.- "It requires all of us to help any of us" — gifts are for the body, not the self.- If your gifts aren't operating for someone else's good, they aren't really being used.- God placed you in your church on purpose; gifts used in unity put the glory of Jesus on display — here, near, and far.

Ephesians 4:1–6 — "Walk worthy of the calling." One body, one Spirit, one Lord — held together, not made identical. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
Paul, "a prisoner of the Lord," doesn't command but urges — he wants unity to rise up from within us, the Spirit moving us to say "yes, I'll walk this way." Unity isn't uniformity; we won't share the same opinions or tastes, but we submit together to one Christ. Gathered around one table, partaking of one body, the church testifies to the very harmony the Father, Son, and Spirit share.
A few things to carry into your week:- Walking worthy is something Paul urges, not commands — it has to become intrinsic, prompted by the Spirit.- Unity isn't sameness; differences engaged in love make all of us better as we submit to one Lord.- The sevenfold "one" — body, Spirit, hope, Lord, faith, baptism, God and Father — is the ground we stand on.- What usually works against unity is simple: "I want my way."

Ephesians 3:14–21 — Paul kneels and prays that Christ would take up residence in your heart. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
With chapters 1–3 preparing us for everything Paul will ask in chapters 4–6, he pauses to pray — and the prayer itself teaches us: see how great God is, and how much you need Him. For Christ to dwell — to take up residence — asks something hard of us: honesty with ourselves and with God about what's actually in our hearts.
A few things to carry into your week:- "Dwelling" means Christ taking up residence — and He delights to, even knowing every wayward, fearful thing in your heart.- You can fool everyone around you, but only daily honesty lets Christ push out what distracts and numbs.- It's a decision no parent or pastor can make for you — it's yours, every single day.- God can do far more than we ask or imagine, so pray bold, specific prayers — by name, for your street, for your classroom.

Ephesians 3:1–13 — You're not just saved; you're sent. Missions and Groups Pastor Jeff Prosser on being a servant of the gospel, in A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
Jeff opens with the question students asked him most across years of ministry — a question about purpose. Paul's answer: the gospel was meant to be seen, not hidden, and we're not only called to believe it but to help others see it clearly. The mystery — Jews and Gentiles made one in Christ, salvation offered to everyone — is God's deliberate plan, and we've been included in the mission to reveal Christ to the world.
A few things to carry into your week:- You're not just saved — you're included in the mission to make Christ visible.- The gospel is meant to be proclaimed and seen, not hidden under a bushel.- The mystery on display is unity: Jew and Gentile, one in Christ, salvation for everyone.- It was God's intentional plan from before time — plan A, because there is no plan B.

Ephesians 3:1–13 — Paul, a prisoner, discovers that grace runs through his weakness to serve others. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
We tend to think of service as something we owe — court-ordered hours, or what our groups expect of us. Paul's service flows from somewhere else entirely: grace operating through his weakness. He wasn't ready to work for anyone else's benefit until he was emptied — and when he begged God three times to remove his thorn, God answered, "My grace is sufficient for you; my power is made perfect in weakness."
A few things to carry into your week:- Grace — not guilt or obligation — is what frees us to serve.- God can use your affliction for someone else's good; Paul served out of emptiness, not strength.- Instead of only praying "God, make it stop," we can ask Him to let His grace flow through the hard thing for someone else.- At the cross, Jesus bore the isolation our sin deserved ("My God, why have you forsaken me?") so He could invite us to cast our sin on Him.

Ephesians 2:19–22 — You're no longer a stranger or an alien; you're a fellow citizen, built into God's own household. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
As Paul closes chapter 2, what was once true of the Gentiles — separated, alienated, without hope — is no longer who they are. Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ as the cornerstone, we're being grown together into a holy temple where God is worshiped.
A few things to carry into your week:- In Christ, "stranger" and "alien" are no longer your identity — you're a citizen and a member of God's household.- The whole church is being built into a holy temple, joined together on Christ the cornerstone.- Faithfulness is measured by the cornerstone, not by crowds, dollars, or influence — sometimes it even looks like fewer.- Whatever you carry — grief, anger, lust, resentment — your sin can never outpace His grace (Ephesians 1:7).

Ephesians 2:14–18 — "He himself is our peace." Christ tears down the dividing wall and makes two into one. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
The Ephesian church had real fractures — Jewish-background and pagan-background believers who distrusted one another. Paul's answer is Christ Himself: by His death He breaks down the wall of hostility and creates "one new man in place of two," reconciling us both to each other and to God.
A few things to carry into your week:- Christ doesn't just make peace — He is our peace, and the solution to the fractures every church carries.- The dividing wall of hostility came down at the cross; two are made one new man.- Reconciliation runs in two directions at once — to God, and to one another.- Being reconciled to God isn't a series of right things; it's one thing: "Jesus, save me."

Ephesians 2:11–13 — "Remember… you were without hope and without God" — and then, "brought near by the blood of Christ." Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
Paul tells the Gentiles to remember who they once were — outside the covenant, without the promise, without hope. We're prone to set our hope on flimsier things — ourselves, a spouse, a child — and to drift until we don't recognize where we are. But the whisper that you've wandered too far is just that: a lie.
A few things to carry into your week:- Remembering who we were keeps grace from going stale.- When the chips are down we'll anchor our hope to almost anything — our grit, our people — and it always comes up short.- "You've taken yourself too far from God" is a lie; you are not so lost that you can't be found.- Seeing your own waywardness is itself grace at work — the Spirit drawing a wayward child home, again and again.

Ephesians 2:8–10 — Saved by grace through faith, not by works — and yet created for good works. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
Grace is undeserved mercy; faith is the humility with which we receive it. We're not saved by our works — but we are God's workmanship, created for good works He prepared beforehand, specific to each of us. The only "walk" Paul had named before this was our walk in deadness; now we're made to walk in good.
A few things to carry into your week:- Grace is undeserved mercy; faith is the humble hands that receive the gift — neither is earned.- You're His workmanship, with good works prepared specifically for you to walk in.- We waste energy trying to make our "good works" line up with what we most enjoy — but there's real good for you to do.- Your redeemed story — failures and all — is one only you can tell your neighbor.

Ephesians 2:1–7 — "But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive together with Christ." Lead Pastor Matt Beasley continues A Study Through Ephesians at Severns Valley.
Paul moves from the exalted, reigning Christ of chapter 1 to the starkest contrast: we were dead — not occasionally sinful, but dead — in our trespasses, pressed from outside, inside, and by the enemy. Then come the two best words in the passage: "But God." Rich in mercy, He made us alive, raised us, and seated us with Christ.
A few things to carry into your week:- "Dead" isn't an exaggeration — we don't get to whitewash the backstory.- The hinge of the entire gospel is two words: "But God."- Salvation is a gift received, never a wage earned — made alive, raised, and seated with Christ.- It's an invitation to come and be known: to receive what you could never work for.
