Ephesians 6:1–4 — Paul turns to the smallest, most overlooked voices in the room — the kids — and hands parents a charge that's bigger than good behavior: raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 5:21–33 — Submission isn't a leash the strong hand to the weak; it's the shape of a Spirit-filled life, given and returned. 1 Kings 17 – 2 Kings 2 — Elijah's whole life, mountaintop fire and cave-bound despair, becomes the story of one ordinary man handing off a calling to another. John 13:1–20 — Jesus washes His disciples' feet, giving us a scandalous, sacrificial pattern for what it means to love people. Jesus' point isn't that the church needs a foot-washing ministry; it's that His followers are called to a love so obvious and so sacrificial that it looks reckless to a watching world. 1 Samuel 1–3 — What does it actually look like to love God this week — not on Sunday, but in the middle of an ordinary, hurried life? Psalm 100 — The only Psalm explicitly labeled a psalm of thanksgiving calls us to something harder than showing up: it asks whether what's happening on the outside actually matches what's in our hearts. Logan continues Summer in the Psalms at Severns Valley.Psalm 100 is five verses, but they carry a full theology of worship — God doesn't just care that he is worshiped; he cares how. Logan walks verse by verse through the psalm's paired commands, showing how actions and attitudes are inseparable: an action without a holy attitude is an empty performance, and a holy attitude without action is complacent faith. Along the way, he traces how Christ fulfills every line — he is the gate of John 10, the Good Shepherd of verse three, and the one whose finished work tore the veil so we could enter God's presence fully.A few things to carry into your week:A joyful noise requires no skill, only a joyful heart — God commands our participation, not our perfection.Worship isn't a box you check on Sunday; Romans 12 calls us to present our whole lives as a living sacrifice, which means every workday, every ordinary moment is an act of service.Our theology fuels our doxology — we can't worship a God we don't know, and knowing him means intimacy, not just information.Christ is the gate. Psalm 23 — A passage this familiar is easy to zip past, so read it this morning as if you've never laid eyes on it. Jeff Prosser continues Summer in the Psalms at Severns Valley.Psalm 23 is quoted so often we tend to check out, so Jeff Prosser slows down to walk through the shepherd's actual world: still waters, the rod and staff, and the oil a shepherd poured over the snake holes so his sheep could graze in the very presence of their enemies. From there he shows a Shepherd who provides before we know our need, restores us when we wander, and takes the sting out of death. That same Shepherd put on flesh in Jesus, knows our voice, and leaves the ninety-nine to bring the one back home.A few things to carry into your week:- The Lord is my shepherd. Sheep aren't as helpless as their reputation, but they are completely dependent on the shepherd, and so are we. Freedom doesn't come from carrying our own weight; it comes from following him.- He provides before you know you need it. Before you ever knew you needed a Savior, one was already given. And when you stray, he restores, just as Jesus met Peter after three denials and simply asked, "Do you love me?"- You don't have to clean yourself up first. God can't love you any more than he already showed at the cross, and he comes right where you are, no speech required, like the father who ran to meet his son.- Death is only a shadow. Psalm 6:1–10 — When you're broken and God seems silent, you don't have to pretend you're fine or plead how good you've been. You can come as you are and appeal to his steadfast love. Lead Pastor Matt Beasley brings a standalone message at Severns Valley.
Psalm 6 sits among the penitential psalms, yet it names no particular sin. What it captures instead is brokenness: grief, weariness, and crying out to a God who seems to go quiet. Drawing on John 9, the long suffering of missionary Adoniram Judson, and Paul's picture of treasure in jars of clay, Lead Pastor Matt Beasley shows that hardship isn't always proof of our sin, and that our hope was never triumphalism but surrender. The psalm moves from a broken request to settled confidence: the Lord has heard the sound of our weeping, and his deliverance is sure.
A few things to carry into your week:- Suffering isn't always evidence you're to blame. When the disciples asked who sinned, Jesus said neither — the man was born blind so God's power would be displayed. The promise that enough faith will float you over every trouble simply isn't true.- Bring God your honest brokenness. The psalmist doesn't posture or list his good deeds. He appeals to God's mercy and steadfast love, and that kind of vulnerability isn't complaining — it's something God delights in.- Your standing before God rests on his character, never on your sinlessness. The enemy will agree you're unworthy of the cross, and he's right, which is exactly what makes grace gracious. God waited for your surrender, not your performance.- We have a Savior who is no stranger to suffering. Jesus wept in the garden as he faced the cross. And we worship out of that same frailty, jars of clay displaying a power that belongs to God, encouraging one another even from a place of despair.
